PURPLE TREE BOOKS REVIEW: I was pleasantly surprised at how beautifully and creatively this illustrator is able to convey such a range of emotions through her intriguing school of fish. It is her fantastic choices of emotions that make this picture book even better; Van Hout conveys not just the general emotions that appear in most children’s books such as happy and sad but stretches the imagination to reveal a phenomenal display of emotions such as shocked, astonished, bored, sure, shy, jealous, nervous, furious and brave. Van Hout’s work is simply fantastic!

BOOK SUMMARY: Clear, strong lines and radiant colors that seem to smile at the reader characterize Mies van Hout’s drawings. In “Happy, ” Mies shows all the emotions a young child encounters. Each double page spread is devoted to one fish, showing a particular emotion with its name in lettering that expresses the same feeling. Swim into “Happy” where the dazzling fish sparkle against the dark background and let the images spark laughter and empathy.
